Here are a few metaphors to help get you going. Your metaphor for today and tomorrow can be the same, like my tree metaphor; a version of each other, like a dinner today and a feast tomorrow; or two very different ones, like a circus today and a lake tomorrow.

I learned about metaphors from my friend and collaborator Jim Long, director of research at Herman Miller. Jim had done a study where he asked people to describe their organizations through metaphors. Beehive, circus, theater, emergency room, and zoo…

What is key here is not only the metaphor but its description. A beehive could be the best of organizations, very organized, productive, with a sweet product. But it could also be the worst place for creativity, individualism, and initiative taking, with everyone working as drones under a queen bee.
